Letters written by Harriet Newell Hutchinson (1824-1908) and Lucius
Salisbury (1824-1904) during their courtship and a few
later family letters. The letters written between 1843 and their 1847
marriage describe Salisbury's move to Missouri from
Vermont and his impressions of life there; Hutchinson's letters convey
family and local news. The couple settled in Chariton
County, Missouri, where they founded the town of Salisbury.

Louis Benecke (1843-1919) was born in Stiege, Germany, and immigrated to
the United States in 1856. He settled in
Brunswick, Missouri, where he became a lawyer, fought in the Civil War,
served as a state senator, and was active in the
Republican party and other political and civic activities. This collection
chronicles his career as a lawyer and military claims
agent, as well as his involvement in promoting German immigration to
Chariton County and his writing for German-language
newspapers. Included is correspondence, in German, with his brother,
Robert, who was a well-known photographer and
printer in St. Louis. Also included are the records of German-American
fraternal organizations, Benecke's correspondence
with German steamship lines, and information on German-American veterans of
the Civil War.

       Letters written to his brother William W. Lewis of Culpepper County,
Virginia from Missouri. Lewis settled
       in Chariton County and later was a merchant in Miami, Saline County,
Missouri. His letters describe Howard
       County and state politics. He compares Missouri to Virginia and
discusses crops, soil fertility, commodity
       prices, wages, land prices, social life, slavery, education,
salaries, Indian trade, family, and friends.

Matthews, Lizzie Blanche (c. 1852- ), Papers, 1885-1920

Primarily letters from Matthews to her fiance, George H. Brooks, between
1889 and 1900. The letters convey personal news,
comment on teaching, and discuss local events. Matthews grew up in Mexico,
Missouri. Prior to her marriage she taught
school in Audrain and Chariton counties and operated a store in Salisbury.
 

Hill, William E. and Bettie Redding, Letters, 1851, 1865-1866

Correspondence between husband and wife concerning the Civil War
destruction of home and property in Keytesville,
Chariton County, Missouri. Hill, a Southern sympathizer, returned to
Keytesville to locate and rescue his property, but
decided to reopen his mercantile establishment and bring his family home.
Hill's letters to his wife relate his attempts to set up
a household, news of bushwhackers and other events in Chariton County, and
concern for her well-being. Later letters
provide details of conditions in postwar Missouri.

A memoir of William Schrader of Chariton County, Missouri, in which he
relates lengthy anecdotes regarding slavery in
central Missouri, prewar politics, the Missouri-Kansas border conflict, the

and his service in the 9th Missouri Cavalry, State Militia.
