01 May 1897
Donated by :  Madeline Reese
W.P. Newlon, a man who came to Missouri from Illinois, and has been living on Mrs. Virgil Harding's
farm near Dalton for the past year and a half has absconded, leaving Joseph Miles and John R. Price
of Dalton in the lurch, the former to the tune of $50 or $60 and the latter for $75. Newlon took off
with him a team of horses one of which was mortgaged to Mr. Miles and the other to Mr. Price. He
also got away with 40 barrels of corn belonging to Price. It is needless to say that Newlon in much
wanted by Messrs. Price and Miles to answer for his misdeeds in betraying their confidence.

Professor A. F Willis, who has been principal of the Keytesville public schools for the past two years
went to Glasgow last Saturday and closed a contract with the public school board to teach a nine
months school at that place, beginning the first Monday in next September, at a salary of $100 a
month.

The Presbyterian reader of the Courier will be sorry to learn of the serious illness of Rev Dr. James
H. Brooks, pastor emeritus of the Washington Avenue Presbyterian Church St. Louis.

The damage to the west wall of Randolph Wessner's brick storeroom in Dalton, caused by the burning
of the restaurant of Johnson Ewing, colored, on Monday night of last week, has been adjusted by
Christian Stawitz, an adjustor for the Hartford Fire Insurance Company. The loss sustained, $150,
was promptly paid by the company to the entire satisfaction of Mr. Wessner. Our good friend, T.J.
Clarkson, is the local agent for Hartford at Dalton.

Died, Tuesday night at her home in Brunswick, Mrs John A. Cason, aged about 60 years. Mrs Cason
was first attacked by la grippe followed by paralysis resulting in her death. She leaves a husband and
two children, a son and a daughter, to mourn the loss of wife and mother.

Lee Hocker, one of the bright young teachers of Chariton county has been engaged to teach the Bell
school, six miles northeast of town, for the next fall and winter term. We congratulate all parties
on the mutual good fortune of the school.

Through carelessness in correcting a proof last week, the Courier was made to say that Wm G. White,
the young man who shot and killed Harry Myers, a negro, in Keytesville on Tuesday April 6th, was
59 years old. It should have been 29 instead of 59.

We are sorry to hear that Mrs. John Shaughnessy, the good wife of our esteemed friend  "Uncle John"
Shaughnessy, of Newhall, is dangerously ill with catarrh of the stomach.
