Mills-Wills
I believe that 2 entries on
early marriages are incorrect.
1. Thomas Barbee
marriage to Elvera Mills, 29 Dec 1842: I am confident that her name is Elvira Wills. I have a copy of the
marriage record and although it is hard to read, the first letter of her last
name is a "W" instead of an "M", when compared to other
"W"'s on the page. I have other
reasons to believe it is "Wills." I would be happy to send you
a copy of the marriage record. I do not have a scanner at present, so I
would have to mail it. I copied it at the Brookfield Library.
The supporting evidence is as
follows: Mariah Jane Wills death certificate lists her mother as Elvira
Owens. Mariah married Robert Henry Ware, Oct 1852, in Linn Co. In
1850 census, I find this R.H. Ware counted as laborer, in household of Thomas
Barbee and wife Elvira, with daughter Mariah, who is right age for my Mariah, altho no last name is given for her in census. 1840
census for Linn Co has Alvira Wills as head of household with 4 children. There are no
other Wills in 1850 in Linn Co.
Elvira Owens Wills is my g g
g grandmother. I am concerned about this
because everywhere I find her in online entries (ancestry.com,
familysearch.org ,
& rootsweb), she is listed as Elvira Mills,
and I would like to have the correct information out there.
2. Charles J. Fore
marriage to Ann E. Mills, 5 Oct
1848: On early marriages page, it lists her as Mills. On Selected Will Abstracts page, it lists her as Wills. I do not have marriage
record on her, but am interested in this because I am trying to determine
relationship to above Elvira Wills.
Next time I am in MO, I will reserach this at
Brookfield Library. (probably summer).
