The Churches of Marceline: Assembly of God Church
|
|
Reverend
Lillian Despain started the Assembly of God Church in the early forties.
She held services at various locations until a building was acquired on
North Kansas Avenue behind what is now Walsworth Publishing. As the
vagaries of life and a temperamental stove often dictated, services were
sometimes held in the home of one of the congregation. Eventually
the building at the present location was purchased. It was formerly a
laundromat. Many improvements were added over the years, and in 1962 a
four room parsonage was erected in the rear of the church. In 1982 the
house next door was purchased for a parsonage, and the former parsonage
was converted into classrooms. Members of the church generously donated
their time and labor in the renovation of the house, while the
congregation donated for the materials used and made certain that the
workers were well fed. Later the inside as well as the outside of the
church received a facelift, all through the generous contributions of the
church body. The
Marceline Assembly of God Church is a small, but Christ oriented church
and all are invited to visit and worship with them. The
pastors up to and including 1987 are: Reverend Lillian Despain, Reverend
Steele, Reverend Aubrey Grindstaff, Reverend Jackie Marshall, Reverend
Harold Scott, Reverend Larry McAtee, Reverend Lloyd Brown, Reverend
Leonard Hutsell, Reverend William Price, and the present pastor, Reverend
Wayne Welborn. We
have only one life, it will soon be past, only what is done for Christ
will last. Submitted
