ROOTS-L Resources: Info and Tips for Using ROOTS-L

  • roots-l.welcome: The welcome file sent to all new subscribers. There is additional material useful when starting out with ROOTS-L in roots-l.welcome1, roots-l.welcome2, and roots-l.welcome3.
  • genealog.learning: A helpful set of suggestions for how to best contribute to ROOTS-L. This material should probably be incorporated into our WELCOME file.
  • roots-l.helpfile: A useful overview of ROOTS-L and its commands and resources, for both new and old subscribers.
  • faq.listserv: An review of LISTSERV commands. Ignore that bit about ROOTS-L messages appearing in soc.roots and vice versa -- that's no longer the case.
  • faq.address: Which address is which? ROOTS-L -vs- LISTSERV, it's important to keep them straight.
  • roots-l.catalog: A fairly current list of the various genealogy files stored on the ROOTS-L LISTSERV.
  • genealog.submit: Directions on how to submit an article for genealog area.
  • genealog.digest1: More than you probably ever wanted to know about the DIGEST command for ROOTS-L. If you're just looking for a summary of commands, a better source would be our roots-l.welcome2 file.
  • faq.mischint: Some suggestions on how to write an effective message and how not. Also a hint on how to get through to an address that bounces, although I think simply adding the final "M" to the example Genie address might have been a better cure for the problem :-)
  • faq.what2ask: A shorter version of the faq.mischint file described above (which isn't especially long in the first place.)
